It wasn’t always the case, but nowadays a person with astigmatism can use a selection of soft toric or hard contact lenses to correct their eyesight. So what does a “Toric lens” mean?. Toric refers to the lens’s physical and optical construction, as in the “torus” shape, shown below, to the right, as a rugby ball shaped lens. In optical terms, a toric lens is one in which either or both of the optical surfaces have the effect of a cylindrical lens, ie the lens has two powers, achieved by using curvatures at different angles, so that a lens can deal with astigmatism and myopia.

Toric contact lenses are made from the same materials as normal contact lenses, and can be either soft or rigid construction (RGP). Some may have a preference for RGP types, as they retain their shape on the cornea better than soft lenses and tend to provide a clearer or crisper vision.

Some care is required when fitting toric contact lenses, as to work well they are designed not to rotate and must remain relatively stable over the eye. Torics are also available as cosmetic contact lenses, either as disposable, or more commonly as a non-disposable type lens.

Disposable contacts are a relatively recent development in contact lens technology, Introduced in the late 80’s, they have now become the most common type of contact lens. They are meant to be worn for a specific period of time, then thrown out and replaced with a fresh pair of lenses. Their life can be extended by regular cleaning, but of course this defeats the object of the exercise!

To make matters worse in the choice selection, a few types of disposable contact lenses are available ,disposable, frequent replacement, reusable, daily wear (remove them each night), and extended wear (ie sleep with them in).

So why do we need to throw them out at all?

Substances like protein , calcium, and lipids, found in tears , can build up on your lenses. These deposits make your contacts less comfortable , and can also make your eyes more infection prone.

There are two main ways to avoid contact lens care, one is to sleep in your lenses, and then replace your lenses periodically.

The other more obvious choice is to wear daily disposables, also called one-day disposables, contacts that you discard every night, and replace with a new pair in the morning .

This is widely seen as the best option, it combines the qualities of convenience and health. Convenient because there is no lens cleaning involved, and it’s healthy because there is minimal daily lens protein buildup, and a reduced risk of eye problems caused by sleeping with them in.

Why Buy online contact lens ?. Presently, thousands do, simply because of the simplicity and the cost savings to be gained. Online contact lens suppliers can offer lower prices than their High street counterparts due to their low overheads and the ability to purchase lenses in bulk.

All a contact lens purchaser needs to do is to provide a COPY of a valid, signed and dated prescription from their optician.
A contact lens prescription is similar to a spectacle prescription. It does, however, contain specific contact lens related information. The prescription will state the brand of lenses for which a person has been fitted and the size and strength of the lenses.

Normally if you order online, your details will stay in the online store’s database. To re-order, one simply logs in to the system, using an e-mail address and password.

The leading online suppliers of discount contact lenses are :
